What are Cannabinoids and Terpenes?

All types of cannabis contain hundreds of complex chemical compounds, some of which are terpenes and cannabinoids. Plant cannabinoids (phytocannabinoids) are predominantly carboxylic acid compounds. Heat must be applied to “decarboxylate” to their non-acid forms to achieve the most potent form of the compound. For example, THCA the acid form of THC does not have an intoxicating effect. It must be heated in an oven or heated by smoking or vaping to achieve the intoxicating effect. Cannabis contains many phytocannabinoids in different proportions. In the case of CBD Hemp, THCA, and THC are low to negligible in content. True Indoor’s CBD Hemp products contain mostly CBD, followed by smaller amounts of CBG, CBGC, and CBDV, depending on which product you use.

Phytocannabinoids:
• CBG (Cannabigerol)
• THC (Δ9–tetrahydrocannabinol)
• CBD (Cannabidiol)
• CBC (Cannabichromene)
• CBGV (Cannabigerivarin)
• THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin)
• CBDV (Cannabidivarin)
• CBCV (Cannabichromevarin)
• CBN (Cannabinol)

Research suggests that in conjunction with our body’s endocannabinoid system , phytocannabinoids and endocannabinoids (those produced within out body) provide a range of health benefits:

What are Terpenes?
Terpenes are fragrant plant chemicals found in cannabis and other plants. Both cannabinoids and terpenes are found in highest concentration in the trichomes of cannabis flowers. Terpenes are responsible for the beautiful and different aromas from the various strains of CBD hemp flower and full-spectrum products extracted from them.

Terpenes from CBD Flower
The many unique terpenes that can be found in True Indoor’s CBD Hemp Flower and CBD Hemp Flower Extract are:

Myrcene
Myrcene is the most abundant terpene in cannabis. It provides, a fruity, earthy aroma with overtones of spice.

Limonene
Limonene is the second most abundant terpene in cannabis. Present in citrus fruits, limonene is responsible for lemon smell in many strains. For therapeutic purposes, limonene is known to improve mood and reduce stress. Researchers also found it to have antifungal, antibacterial benefits.

Linalool
A terpene found in rosewood, bergamot, coriander, rose, jasmine, and lavender that provides a spicy, floral aroma. Linalool is also found in lavender, mint, cinnamon and coriander. That provide a sedative effect.

Caryophyllene
A terpene in hemp, hops, cloves, and rosemary. Best known for its spicy and peppery note, caryophyllene is also found in black pepper, cinnamon, oregano, basil and rosemary. Beta-caryophyllene binds to CB2 receptors, which makes it an ingredient in anti-inflammatory topicals and creams. Caryophyllene is the only terpene that binds to cannabinoid receptors.
Besides its analgesic and anti-anxiety properties, some studies have found that caryophyllene has some very promising properties when it comes to alcoholism rehabilitation.

A group of scientists performed research on mice and found that this terpene reduces voluntary intake of alcohol. They even recommended caryophyllene for treating alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Alpha-pinene and Beta-pinene
Provides the pine aroma in many cannabis strains, conifers, and other plants including rosemary, orange rind, basil, and parsley.
Pinene provides an anti-inflammatory effect in the human body. It is also beneficial to improving respiratory conditions, arthritis, Crohn’s disease and cancer.

Alpha-bisabolol
Alpha-bisabolol (also known as levomenol and bisabolol) has a pleasant floral aroma and can also be found in chamomile flower and candeia tree.
Alpha-bisabolol is effective in treating bacterial infections and wounds and is a great antioxidant with anti-irritation and analgesic properties.

Humulene
Humulene was the first terpene found in hops. Its aroma contains earthy, woody and spicy notes.
Besides cannabis, it can be also found in clove, sage, and black pepper. It has a variety of medical properties. Early research has shown humulene to be anti-proliferative, meaning it prevents cancer cells from growing. Also, it proved to be effective in suppressing appetite, making it a potential weight loss tool. Furthermore, like many other cannabis terpenes mentioned above, it also reduces inflammation, relieves pain and fights bacterial infections.

Terpineol
The aroma of terpineol can be best described as floral-like, reminiscent of lilacs, apple blossom, and a little bit citrusy. Terpineol tastes like anise and mint. Terpineol has a pleasant scent, similar to lilac, and is a common ingredient in perfumes, cosmetics, and flavors.
It relaxes heavily and it’s usually the one responsible for the notorious couch lock effect. Medical benefits of terpineol also include antibiotic and antioxidant properties. It can be found Girl Scout Cookies, Jack Herer, and OG Kush strains.

Geraniol
Besides cannabis, geraniol can be found in lemons and tobacco. Its smell reminds of rose grass, peaches and plums. It’s usually used in aromatic bath products and body lotions. Geraniol has shown a lot of potential as a neuroprotectant and antioxidant.

Ocimene
Ocimene has a sweet and herbaceous, smell. It may also offer a wide array of medicinal including treatment of diabetes.

Terpinolene
Terpinolene has a complex aroma consisting of pine, flowers, with citrus undertones. It can be found in lilacs, tea tree, nutmeg, cumin, and apples. Research shows that terpinolene may have antifungal and antibacterial properties, and possibly act as an insect repellant. Further research is investigating effects on heart disease and cancer.
